Cyber-Secure Power Router

PI: Alan Mantooth, University of Arkansas

The Cybersecure Power Router project investigates best practices for creating grid-connected power electronics that are cybersecure-by-design. The project layers securities into a combined solar inverter, battery management converter, and grid-tied inverter, to accomplish a reference design for distribute energy resources in general. The system features AES-128 encrypted communication, hardware-assisted monitoring, hardware authentication, and hardware protection for down to the level of the power device switching. The system also features an advanced firmware run-time protection enabling the power electronics to continue operation during firmware updates or patching. The Cybersecure Power Router uses these features to resiliently operate in hostile conditions, greatly reduce downtime, and provide energy management assets at the grid edge.
